How do I take a screenshot on macOS for free?

Last updated: 2026-10-15

Press Shift-Command-5, pick a capture mode, and click Capture — screenshots on macOS are free and built in, no app to install.

The Screenshot app opens as a small panel at the bottom of the screen. Choose Capture Entire Screen, Capture Selected Window, or Capture Selected Portion; the result is saved to your desktop as a PNG by default (Apple Support).

How to

  1. Press Shift-Command-5.
  2. Choose a capture mode in the panel.
  3. Click Capture. The PNG lands on your desktop.

FAQ

Is there a shortcut without opening the panel?
Yes: Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen instantly, and Shift-Command-4 lets you drag to select an area (Apple Support).
